Applications of energy storage Energy storage is an enabling technology for various applications such as power peak shaving, renewable energy utilization, enhanced building energy systems, and advanced transportation. Energy storage systems can be categorized according to application.
A comparison between each form of energy storage systems based on capacity, lifetime, capital cost, strength, weakness, and use in renewable energy systems is presented in a tabular form.
Energy storage systems allow energy consumption to be separated in time from the production of energy, whether it be electrical or thermal energy. The storing of electricity typically occurs in chemical (e.g., lead acid batteries or lithium-ion batteries, to name just two of the best known) or mechanical means (e.g., pumped hydro storage).
Note that other categorizations of energy storage types have also been used such as electrical energy storage vs thermal energy storage, and chemical vs mechanical energy storage types, including pumped hydro, flywheel and compressed air energy storage. Battery, flywheel energy storage, super capacitor, and superconducting magnetic energy storage are technically feasible for use in distribution networks. With an energy density of 620 kWh/m3, Li-ion batteries appear to be highly capable technologies for enhanced energy storage implementation in the built environment.
