Fundamentally, an inverter accomplishes the DC-to-AC conversion by switching the direction of a DC input back and forth very rapidly. As a result, a DC input becomes an AC output. In addition, filters and other electronics can be used to produce a voltage that varies as a clean, repeating sine wave that can be injected into the power grid.

When they do, a string of solar panels forms a circuit where DC energy flows from each panel into a wiring harness that connects them all to a single inverter. The inverter changes the DC energy into AC energy.
4. DC-to-DC Conversion: The DC voltage from the solar panels may be conditioned or boosted through a DC-to-DC converter within the inverter. This stage ensures that the DC voltage is within the range suitable for the subsequent DC-to-AC conversion.
Battery voltage ratings are crucial when selecting an inverter because they dictate how well your inverter will work with your battery system. In off-grid solar setups, for instance, you might use 12V, 24V, or 48V batteries, and the inverter must be designed to operate at the specific battery voltage.
