Energy storage is an idea that dates back over two thousand years. Engineers, investors, and politicians are increasingly researching energy storage solutions in response to growing concerns about fossil fuels' environmental effects as well as the capacity and reliability of global power systems.
As a consequence, to guarantee a safe and stable energy supply, faster and larger energy availability in the system is needed. This survey paper aims at providing an overview of the role of energy storage systems (ESS) to ensure the energy supply in future energy grids.
Energy storage configuration is an important part of new energy access system of public charging and swapping stations. 6, 7 Due to the intermittency and instability of new energy power generation, direct access to power grid may affect its stable operation. Therefore, it is imperative to configure an appropriate energy storage system.
The main objectives of introducing energy storage to a power utility are to improve the system load factor, achieve peak shaving, provide system reserve and effectively minimise the overall cost of energy production. Constraints of various systems must also be satisfied for both charge and discharge storage regimes.
