One of the goals of the HPPII is to increase local electricity generation capacity from 624 MW (2020) to 879 MW by 2025. Many of Namibia's solar and wind energy projects are located in rural areas, where they provide much-needed infrastructure, job opportunities, and income for local communities. These projects also support the development of local businesses and contribute to the overall economic growth of rural regions.
Namibia has also announced plans for a massive 120 MW wind farm in the Erongo Region. This project is expected to be one of the largest wind farms in Southern Africa and will further enhance Namibia's renewable energy capacity. The wind farm will not only provide clean electricity but will also create numerous job opportunities for locals.
While solar energy has received the most attention in Namibia's renewable energy strategy, wind power is also an increasingly important component of the country's energy mix. Namibia's coastline, which stretches over 1,500 kilometers, experiences strong and consistent winds, making it an ideal location for wind power generation. 1.
Namibia's current electricity demand is estimated at approximately 600 MW per annum, with an expected annual growth rate of 5%. The country's generation capacity stands at approximately 486.5 MW, delivering approximately 400MW. This results in a current deficit of about 200MW.
