Solar energy system field in Belgium

This significant addition brings Belgium's cumulative installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity to over 10 GW as of December 2023. The latest data indicates a substantial growth trajectory for solar energy in Belgium over recent years, with installations totaling 1,060 MW in 2022, 850 MW in 2021, 1,010 MW in 2020, 544 MW in 2019, and 367 MW in 2018.

Total solar energy generation in the country reached new highs last year, totaling 8.3 TWh. Solar accounted for 11.9% of Belgium's electricity generation mix in 2024, according to data released by Elia, the country's transmission system operator. The share of solar in the electricity mix was up from 9.5% in 2023.

Solar power directly contributes to the Belgium 's energy security and independence, as well as helping to meet rising electricity demand and CO2 emission reduction goals. The rapid solar photovoltaic installations were primarily due to ongoing supportive government policies and initiatives and a sharp decline in technology and PV system costs.

Belgium has witnessed a remarkable surge in solar energy adoption, with new figures from the Belgian association Energie Commune (formerly known as APERe) revealing that approximately 1.8 GW of new PV systems were installed in the country last year.
