Per capita energy consumption is around 0.83 toe, a level 35% below the South American average (2021). Per capita electricity consumption is approximately 1 500 kWh. In its Electricity Master Plan 2018-2027, Ecuador estimated that its power capacity should increase by 4 GW by 2027 to face a 7%/year increase in electricity demand.

Ecuador provides business opportunities for electric generation given the current electricity crisis and rising demand. Additionally, the country plans to reach self-sufficiency through clean production and potentially export energy to neighboring countries.

CCS is the country's largest hydropower plant by generation capacity. Ecuador's state-owned electricity company CELEC imports electricity from neighboring Colombia, costing $400 million in 2022. It is also increasing diesel purchases from Petroecuador to power its thermal electric power plants.

In 2022, Ecuador's generation capacity was 8,864 MW, of which 5,425 MW (61 percent) corresponded to renewable energy and 3,438 MW (39 percent) to non-renewable energy sources (fossil fuels derived from oil and natural gas).

In its Electricity Master Plan 2018-2027, Ecuador estimated that its power capacity should increase by 4 GW by 2027 to face a 7%/year increase in electricity demand. These figures could reach 5 GW and 10%/year, respectively, in the prospective scenario of basic industrialisation (aluminium, copper, petrochemical).

It is produced from the Amistad field in the Golf of Guayaquil. The prices of electricity are US$10.4c/kWh for households and US$7.8 for industrial customers (2022). These prices have remained roughly stable since 2020. They are much lower than in neighbouring countries (around 45% cheaper than in Colombia).
