In the fast-charging process, the charging current is large, even if the battery pack is equalized, the equalization current is much smaller than the charging current, and the equalization effect is poor, the necessity for equalization is average.
For a series-connected battery pack, when there is a consistency difference among the cells, it causes a decrease in the energy utilization and cycle life of the battery pack. Thus, the equalization of a series-connected battery pack is necessary.
Equalization method can be extended to almost all battery systems, including nickel and lead-acid batteries, since it is not dependent on battery cells' characteristics . Equalization topologies for battery packs are categorized into active and passive equalization.
Disadvantages: The energy utilization of the battery pack is low; the output voltage and power of the battery pack easily fluctuate in the equalization. Advantages: Equalization is fast and suitable for battery packs containing a large number of cells. Disadvantages: The design is complex, and the topologies are costly.
In the actual equalization, when the charging or discharging current is large or the consistency difference is large, if the equalization current is small, it may lead to the untimely equalization of the battery pack.
