As research and development efforts continue in academia, national laboratories, and industry, widespread use of safe, cost-effective molten sodium batteries as well as implementation of new sodium ion-based batteries are expected to be important elements of the evolving energy storage community.
In this review, the fundamentals of the heat generation, accumulation, and transportation in a battery system are summarized and recent key research on materials design to improve sodium-ion battery safety is highlighted. Several efective materials design concepts are also discussed.
Sodium storage materials based on alloys, primarily incorporating elements from Group IVA and VA, including Sn, Sb, Ge, Bi, and P, demonstrate increased theoretical specific capacities due to the creation of Na-rich metallic compounds. Ge-based anodes are appealing for rechargeable batteries due to their moderate volume expansion.
Still, if this issue can be mitigated, these may also be viable technologies in the future. Large-format, grid-scale sodium-based batteries can take a number of forms, using both molten sodium chemistries and varied sodium-ion chemistries.
