Free QuoteThus, an inverter is a device that converts DC to AC. Self-commutated inverters are classified as current source inverters and voltage source inverters. A voltage source inverter is a device that converts its voltage from DC form to AC form. It can be represented in a single phase or in 3 phases.
Load Commutated Inverter Fed Synchronous Motor Drive is shown in Fig. 10.22. The inverter is a current source inverter employing thyristors T 1 – T 6. The commutation of inverter thyristor is done by the voltages induced in armature of the synchronous motor. A chopper is used to obtain a variable dc voltage V ds from the fixed source voltage V.
The commutation of inverter thyristor is done by the voltages induced in armature of the synchronous motor. A chopper is used to obtain a variable dc voltage V ds from the fixed source voltage V. The V ds is varied with V dl so that a required current is supplied to the dc link, and therefore, to the motor.
This method produces a fundamental voltage of 83.9% or 0.839 times the amplitude of fundamental component of unmodulated voltage wave. So inverter is de rated by (100-83.9) 16.1%. There are additional four commutations per cycle and this leads to more switching losses which decreases the efficiency of operation. 4.
The DC current source delivers a unidirectional current I to the inverter and when the inverter feeds a reactive or regenerative load, the DC supply current cannot reverse as it did in the case of a voltage source inverter (VSI).
It is explained with respect to a single phase inverter. Normally there is one commutation per half cycle and this produces a square wave output. Instead of having commutation at the end of half cycle, some more commutations can be created in the half cycle. It is shown in figure.
