From energy arbitrage – where batteries buy electricity at low prices and sell it during peak demand – to ancillary services that stabilise the grid, and capacity payments for ensuring power availability, BESS projects offer diverse revenue streams.

1) Contracted Revenues: Contracted revenues for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) refer to income secured through binding agreements. These contracts are between the BESS operator and other entities, such as utilities, grid operators, or commercial off-takers.

As renewable energy integration increases, so do the opportunities for BESS to maximise profits through price volatility and advanced trading strategies. The ability to dynamically shift between these different revenue models – sometimes within the same day – positions BESS as a critical player in the evolving electricity markets.

Finally, using a bottom-up approach, I calculated that a BESS project would need to generate approximately 80 kEUR/MW per year to achieve a 10% internal rate of return (IRR), based on certain assumptions outlined in tab 2 of my Excel sheet.
