It is a guideline that outlines safe storage practices, including the charging and discharging of lithium-ion batteries, lithium metal batteries, and hybrid lithium batteries. If you would like to learn more about shipping of lithium batteries, we wrote this guide about just that.
• Each outer package must be a strong outer packaging and capable of withstanding a 1.2 meter drop test, in any orientation, without damage to the cells or batteries, without shifting that would allow battery-to-battery contact, and without release of the contents. They are not required to be packaged in UN specification packaging.
Packaging must be made of durable, non-conductive materials to prevent short circuits. Clip-Lok SimPak offers returnable steel and wooden packaging for lithium batteries. Packaging must be designed to withstand mechanical stresses like vibration, impact, and stacking pressure during transit.
However, if the package contains no more than 2.5 kg of lithium metal cells or batteries, UN performance packaging is not required when the package displays both the Lithium Battery Mark and the Class 9 Lithium Battery label. See 173.185(c)(5)(i) for details. • Damaged, defective, or recalled lithium batteries are forbidden from air transport.
Lithium-ion batteries shipped separately (UN 3480) must have a maximum charge of 30% SoC. Class 9 Hazard Label for dangerous goods. Handling Labels: “Cargo Aircraft Only” for certain shipments. UN Number & Proper Shipping Name (e.g., UN 3480 – Lithium-ion batteries).
