Let's take a look at the average lifespan of battery storage systems and how to maximise their life expectancy. When it comes to the longevity of battery storage systems, you can generally expect them to last between 10 and 12 years. That said, some premium models can keep going for up to 15 years or even longer with the right care and maintenance.
Lithium batteries, including lithium coin cell batteries, have virtually no self-discharge below approximately 4.0V at 68°F (20°C). Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, such as the 18650 battery, boast remarkable service life when stored at 3.7V—up to 10 years with nominal loss in capacity.
Storing batteries at room temperature (around 20°C or 68°F) is ideal for maintaining their charge and extending their life. The charge level at which lithium batteries are stored is crucial. Storing a battery at 100% charge or fully discharged can cause internal stress, leading to reduced capacity over time.
If the battery modules are NOT connected together (either power or communication connections), then the storage times are one year at 25 degrees C. Note: Samsung requires a "voltage check" of the batteries every 180 days during storage.
When storing lithium batteries for an extended period of time, it is best to store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. It is also recommended to charge the battery to about 50% of its capacity before storage. Additionally, it is important to check the battery's charge every six months and recharge it if the charge drops below 50%.
