The report says Victoria lacks an established and proven capacity to process solar panels beyond basic processing of recyclable components, such as aluminium frames.
Victoria's 2035 renewables target is forecast to require 27 million solar panels raising concerns over end-of-life management, with a government modelling forecast that tonnages of photovoltaic system e-waste will increase around 20% per annum over the next decade.
Despite the potential of the printed flexible solar technology, Dr Anthony Chesman, leader of CSIRO's Renewable Energy Systems Group, emphasised that it is not intended to replace silicon rooftop solar PV modules but rather to complement them.
By the end of this CRC project in 2023, a PV module upcycling plant will be operating to process end-of-life PV modules collected Australia-wide and supply the recovered materials to downstream businesses for value-added products. OJAS infrastructures is aiming to expand this solution across Australia.
This book is intended for use as a textbook on photovoltaic solar energy for upper-level undergraduate/graduate engineering students. Instructors may request a copy of this title and any online ancillaries for adoption consideration.
