7.5 MW field result of multinational effort already provides more than 10% of nation's electric generation capacity; more to be developed Gitega/Mubuga, Burundi – 9 May 2023: President Ndayishimiye of Burundi today visited Gigawatt Global's solar power plant in Mubuga, Burundi, near the capital Gitega, the nation's first utility-scale solar field.
Roughly 86% of Burundians live in rural areas and a mere 1% of them have access to electricity. We have made feasibility studies for 14 villages across Burundi to electrify them. We also implemented a solar street lighting program in several cities in the country. We have received our first licence for a grid-connected solar project in the PA.
According to Geoff Sinclair, Managing Director of Camco Clean Energy, which manages REPP: "Once built, the solar plant will add nearly 15% to Burundi's generation capacity using clean energy." (This passage directly answers the question about the impact on the energy sector.)
Christopher Clarke, Managing Partner at Inspired Evolution, congratulated all parties involved in getting the project to this stage for their part in realising a high development impact solar PV generation plant in Burundi.
They will supply over 62 GWh of clean, baseload electricity to the national grid annually. Songa Energy is part of Anzana Electric Group's broader portfolio in Burundi. This includes Weza Power – an electricity distribution utility that aims to connect over two thirds of the population (around 9 million people) over the next 7 years.
