Free QuoteUruguay's wind installed capacity surpasses energy demand. Uruguay exports energy to its neighbors. There is concern in Uruguay's wind sector for future years.
The smallest obstacle is the availability of resources for financing (#26), while wind energy price (#31), macroeconomic instability (#28), lack of qualified staff (#30), and lack of infrastructure in general (#30) were generally not perceived as a difficulty that could hamper the long-term expansion of the wind source in Uruguay.
In a way, Uruguay's strategic position in the energy industry in the region can very well serve as an energy reservoir when its neighbors are in need; the country will then need to rethink the future investment agenda in wind power.
As of today, two windfarms developed by SOWITEC Uruguay with a cumulative capacity of 95 MW have started operation in 2013 and 2017, respectively. With a pipeline of around 500 MW wind and solar projects SOWITEC is now one of the major players in the Uruguayan energy market and is well positioned for upcoming tenders.
As a result of this policy, in just over a decade Uruguay reached in 2018 a capacity of 1511 MW of wind power plants in commercial operation, representing 31% of the country's installed capacity.
In 2007, 2008, UTE installed 17 wind measurement stations across the country.” Subsequently, the expansion of wind power in Uruguay took place basically through a bidding mechanism operated by UTE (as a distributor) and determined by a decree issued by the government.
