To ensure the sustainability of ICT sectors, it is necessary to study their energy consumption from the embodied energy perspective.
The ICT sector is energy- and carbon-lean, consuming only approximately 4 percent of the world's electricity and contributing to 1.4 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Figure 1. ICT sector development from 2007 to 2023 (pre-2007 figures are estimates)
ICT will be equally instrumental to the roll-out of renewable energy sources, increasing energy eficiency in current and future networks as well as promoting investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technology.
The advantages of integrating ICT into solutions that will enable access to afordable and reliable energy everywhere as outlined in this report may not be obvious to energy providers, and there may be a lack of trust in ICT. However, a joint efort by policy makers and regulators can change percep-tions and prejudice for the beter.
The main reason may be that the direct energy consumption of ICT sectors (DEI) is relatively minor compared to that of energy-intensive sectors such as the steel sector. For example, the DEI of ICT accounted for only 1.6% of the total energy consumption in China in 2018 [ 16].
ICT Group are one of the few IT providers with real experience in the physical energy domain. This is the basis for high-quality projects for the business-critical systems of energy providers, heating companies, and network providers.
